Nick Lawrence is a photographer living in Berkeley CA. He grew up in New York City, graduated Cornell University in Sociology and Anthropology and studied art history at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts. As a photographer he is primarily self taught but studied with Lisette Model who was an important influence.
Nick is currently showing photographs from his Lower East Side Teenager series at San Francisco’s Euqinom Gallery from January 15 to March 5, 2022.

His Lower East Side interiors were featured in Keep Me Nearby at the Cuchifritos Gallery, NYC (June, July 2019)
Images from the Ink Factory series were exhibited in a one person show at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, San Francisco (2016}.
He was included in New Photography (inspired by the Paul Sack Collection) at the Berkeley Art Center (2015)

A one person show of his Fayette County Tennessee civil rights pictures titled The Other Freedom Summer was exhibited at the J Houston Gordon Museum at the University of Tennessee at Martin (2015).
In recent years he has been included in numerous group shows. Prints from a current project, Ink Factory Photographs, are available at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery.
Step By Step, a book with Nick Lawrence’s Fayette County photographs, was published in 1965 (Norton). He was included in the show and catalogue, Vision and Expression in Contemporary Photography at the George Eastman House (Rochester NY 1970), had a one person show of his Lower East Side Teenagers at the Underground Gallery (NYC 1970), and had a portfolio of his pictures published in Creative Camera Magazine. After moving to California he showed an autobiographical series at the University of California (SF 1973).
He is represented in a number of private collections as well as in the collection of the George Eastman House. Forty-one of his prints were purchased by the University of Tennessee and are in Special Collections at the Paul Meek Library (U of T at Martin).
